About Olivia

Hi there!

I'm Olivia, it's nice to meet you. I am Bachelor of Communication student with a major in Journalism and a minor in English Literature. As a multimedia journalist, I have a passion for telling stories. I love sharing the stories and events that matter to Canadians, at both national and community levels.

From creating a video profile on a family whose life was changed by a charitable music program, to interviewing students about housing concerns after Calgary's worst flood on record, I care about sharing stories that let people connect with one another. As a reporter and editor for The Calgary Journal, I reported on diverse issues from binge drinking in Alberta to how to prepare oneself for winter bike commuting.

In fall 2014 I interned at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Toronto. I worked in Syndicated Audio, a department that produces content for CBC morning and afternoon radio shows across the country. I was able to contribute my own story ideas, and developed my skills in writing scripts for broadcast. I also cut clips and audio from important events or interviews for radio broadcast, which strengthened my editing skills.

In 2014 I was awarded the Newalta Research Grant, and am completing a study on how the media portrays the Alberta oil sands. I am conducting analysis on three prominent weekly publications, and will produce a final report on my findings.

As a former varsity athlete, I am still deeply committed to sports and fitness, and have been able to use my experiences as an opportunity to give back to the community. I am the Assistant Coach for the U17 Junior Dinos Women's Volleyball team, who compete under the Alberta Volleyball Association. It has been very rewarding to be able to work within the club that I played for as a high school athlete and which gave me so many wonderful opportunities.
